George Collins - Photographer
I recently interviewed for a job where the interviewer described my experience and various roles as a “portfolio career.” I think this is accurate.
I work as a commercial photographer, workshop tutor, private tutor, gallery invigilator, darkroom technician, administrator for an arts organisation, and camera valuer at an auction house.
When I’m not doing any of the above I’m out capturing images like the ones on this site, though I’m not always sure what I’m looking for. I thought I was photographing British culture, and there are elements of that, but looking at the work here I realise it’s more about how humans and animals interact, a subject I never set out to photograph.
The fairs, shows and events I visit are driven by my curiosity about the people who attend them rather than the animals on show.
I’m also working on experimental pieces that I’ll add in due course. I feel my practice has two sides: the internal (experimental) and the external (documentary). I’m not sure how comfortable we are when photographers and artists try to be more than one thing, you don’t see Adam Fuss running around horse fairs (to my knowledge), nor Alec Soth playing with cliché verre, but here I am trying to figure things out.
